Can Monaco Break Losing Streak Against Marseille?

It’s no secret that Monaco has been playing tremendous football over the last month. But prior to their recent form, Niko Kovac’s men lost three straight fixtures, including a 2-1 defeat to Marseille.

But if there is any time for them to finally beat their Matchday 21 opponents, it would be now. Monaco has bagged at least three goals in every single game since the new year, collecting a perfect nine points in that span. They’ve also looked practically unbeatable on home turf, losing just once in ten matches this term at the Stade Louis II.

Their last victory was a dominant attacking display, with Wissam Ben-Yedder netting a brace, while Kevin Volland also found the back of the net. But a relentless Montpellier side surged back for two goals, with Monaco just scratching out a 3-2 victory.

Ben-Yedder could be hitting his stride at the perfect time as the title race remains wide open. The Frenchman’s two goals last Friday were his first since mid-December, taking his tally to nine on the term. Volland has also contributed ten goals and six assists, with the duo playing a key part in the side’s success this term.

Kovac’s squad currently sits in fourth spot and just six points off league leaders PSG and Lille. With meetings ahead against both of these teams, it’s extremely important that Monaco continue to play well and bang home goals at a high rate.

Marseille Looking to Break Dry Spell

Currently in sixth place and four points off Monaco, a victory on the road this Saturday could potentially move Marseille a step closer to the top four. It’s a long time coming for Andre Villas-Boas’s side, as they’ve secured just one victory in their last eight matches across all competitions.

Their last two appearances resulted in defeats, with RC Lens beating them by a goal on Wednesday, then a very poor Nimes side also pulling off the upset against Marseille last Saturday.

However, Les Olympiens have gone unbeaten against Monaco in their last five clashes, while winning three times. This will be their third game in just a week though, which could take a toll on Marseille’s squad.

But at this point, there shouldn’t be any excuse. A turn in form seems like it could be right around the corner considering their spell of dismal play. Given Marseille’s dominance against Monaco, this could be the perfect opportunity to flip the script.

Goals have been an issue for Marseille lately, scoring just twice in their last three matches. Striker Florian Thauvin is leading the way in the final third with six goals and seven assists, but he’s hit a lull, failing to net in his last five appearances. However, they just secured the signature of Napoli standout Arkadiusz Milik on an 18-month loan, who should certainly add a spark to the attack.

Marseille have also secured just a point in their last three matches away from the Orange Velodrome. On a more positive note though, they have a game in hand which could prove to be crucial later in the season.

Monaco vs Marseille Best Bet

This is a tough one because it’s clear that Marseille has Monaco’s number, but the hosts are running riot on their oppositions right now. Personally, I think it’s about time that Niko Kovac’s side secure a victory against their Ligue 1 rivals.

I do think Marseille is going to improve their form, but it won’t be on Saturday. Monaco can literally taste the top of the table and they know just how important the three points would be here in their chase of PSG.

I’m going with a one-goal victory for the hosts.
