Premier League Manager of the Year Odds List Pep Guardiola as Odds-On -175 Favorite

  • Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola leads the way in Manager of the Year betting
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jurgen Klopp are close behind Guardiola
  • Where does the betting value lie?

Pep Guardiola is the heavy favorite to win Premier League Manager of the Year in the latest odds. The Manchester City boss leads Jurgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Brendan Rodgers out at +1200.

Only four managers have won the award without winning the league title. It takes a spectacular effort to win Manager of the Year without lifting the Premier League title, but a few managers could achieve such a feat if they have a strong second half of the season.

City Looking Strong With Pep Guardiola

Manchester City stuttered early in the season, but they have really hit their stride. Guardiola’s team have won their last 10 and haven’t lost since November 21st. Kevin De Bruyne’s injury and Sergio Aguero’s positive COVID-19 test weaken City short-term, but they have more than enough squad depth to maintain their title push. Guardiola’s side are only second as it stands, though they can go top if they win their game in hand.

City are comfortably clear according to Understat’s expected points. They are over four points ahead of Liverpool on that metric. Performances earlier in the campaign did not get the result they perhaps deserved. Recent wins over Chelsea in the league and Manchester United in the League Cup have demonstrated that this City team can be every bit as dominant as previous iterations.

This is a different City team, more reliant on defense than blowing teams away with flowing attacking football. If anything, that makes them scarier with the abundance of attacking talent at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

It’s not a guarantee Guardiola will win Manager of the Year if City wins the league. There’s a very good chance, though. The former Bayern manager is the deserving favorite to win the award for the third time.

Solskjaer Needs Title

Although top of the table, there’s limited confidence in Manchester United’s title credentials. Solskjaer’s price reflects this. He is only a contender for the award if they win the title.

Finishing second, and pushing City all the way, would be a good season for United. It’s not enough to win Manager of the Year, however. Solskjaer has turned their campaign around, and they are unbeaten in the Premier League since November 1st. But the former Manchester United striker is unlikely to be in serious consideration for Manager of the Year without winning the title.

Manchester United’s expected numbers don’t suggest title contention. Their last four league wins have all come by just one goal. There’s justifiable skepticism about their ability to challenge for the Premier League, and despite good recent results, there are still doubts about Solskjaer’s managerial nous compared to his peers.

The quality of this squad cannot be doubted, and United keep picking up points. They are firmly in the title race, and sitting four points ahead of Liverpool having played a game fewer, it’s a bit of a shock to see Solskjaer at a longer price than Klopp.

Outside Bets

Carlo Ancelotti and Dean Smith are two names to keep an eye on. Everton go level on points with Leicester if they win their two games in hand. Aston Villa are only five points behind Liverpool with two games in hand.

Expected numbers are kinder to Villa than they are to Everton. Regardless, both of these teams have great upside right now. Several top clubs are faltering. Villa finishing in the top six or Everton snatching a Champions League place would put Smith and Ancelotti right in the Manager of the Year mix.

Even after heavy spending, Everton getting a top-four place would be a real surprise. Ancelotti’s achievement would rank alongside what Harry Redknapp did with Tottenham and Alan Pardew did with Newcastle – both won Manager of the Year.

Make no mistake, Villa could get top four, too. A top-six finish is a far more reasonable goal for Smith’s side, and currently sixth on expected points, it’s not an outrageous proposition. Given the low expectations pre-season for Villa, a top-six finish would be a spectacular achievement for Smith.

While Solskjaer is almost guaranteed to win the award if United win the league, Guardiola’s status is more vulnerable. City winning yet another title is less remarkable – it would leave the door ajar for an overachieving manager like Ancelotti or Smith.
