The Wildcats have faced disruption after disruption this season due to COVID-19 but have managed to stay afloat in the Big East Standings. They answered their first conference loss of the season by beating Georgetown 84-74 in their last game.
Marquette is playing everyone close but still failing to find footing in the Big East. They had a chance to take second place Creighton to overtime in their last game but a Koby McEwen three-pointer missed the mark at the buzzer.
Villanova Still A National Powerhouse
We have all been affected by COVID-19 and the Villanova Wildcats are no different. They went almost a month without playing a game from December 23 through January 19 with multiple postponements and cancellations outside of those dates. Still, they’ve managed to stay focused and win games. Their latest win was a testament to the resolve they’ve shown all season.

The Wildcats were never able to get comfortable in their 84-74 win over the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday. They took a two point advantage into the locker rooms after the first half and even trailed in the second half. It was Jermaine Samuels that would simply not let the Wildcats lose, as he went for 32 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win.
Marquette Better Than Their Record
The Golden Eagles may have a losing record but looks can sometimes be deceiving. According to KenPom, they are the 77th best team in the country, which tells a different story. They are able to keep it close with almost anyone and that’s exactly what they did in their last game against Creighton.

The Creighton Blue Jays are ranked 15th in the nation and are second in the Big East standings. They have the 12th most efficient offense (adjusted for opponent) in the land and Marquette had a chance to take them to overtime on a buzzer-beater. D.J. Carton led the way in scoring for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting.
Best Betting Angle
Things don’t get any easier for Marquette in this one as Villanova sports the fifth-best offensive efficiency in the country (adjusted for opponent). They play a slow, grind-it-out pace that relies on good long-range shooting while also limiting opponents’ possessions. The issue for opponents is the Wildcats are one of the better teams in the country at hitting threes.
In the first matchup, the Wildcats took 39 three-point attempts and hit 13 of them, right around their average for the season. If there is one area of concern for the Golden Eagles, it is defending the three-point line. They currently rank 268th in the nation in opponent three-point percentage allowing a 35.6% success rate. If Villanova is even remotely close to connecting from deep at their season average, they can cover this number easily.
The pick: Villanova -11 (-105)
