Meanwhile, Oklahoma State (14-6, 7-6) has won two games in a row to strengthen its NCAA Tournament hopes, but despite the recent surge is still a 2-point underdog in this matchup.

Another Tough Tech Loss

Texas Tech trailed wire-to-wire in a 67-61 loss at Kansas on Saturday as a 2-point favorite. The Red Raiders, though, were within 3 points when the Jayhawks’ Christian Braun made the game-sealing 3-point field goal with 24 seconds left.

Kansas limited Texas Tech’s leading scorer, Mac McClung, to 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting, including 2 of 7 on 3-point tries. The junior guard, who is averaging 16.9 points a game, did have 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The point total was his third lowest of the season.

Senior forward Marcus Santos-Silva scored 12 points and pulled down 8 rebounds and sophomore guard Kevin McCullar had 12 points and 7rebounds.

Santos-Silva had gone six straight games without scoring in double figures and is averaging 8.4 points and 6.2 rebounds.

McCullar has averages of 10.6 and 6.6 and has scored in double digits in four of five games since being held to a season-low 2 points in a loss at West Virginia.

Freshman guard Micah Peavy’s 10 points put him in double figures for the first time since Dec. 12 and just the fourth time this season.

Kansas also did a good job defensively on sophomore guard Terrence Shannon, limiting him to 5 points, less than half his 12.6 average.

Four of Texas Tech’s six Big 12 losses have been by 6 points or less.

Likekele Back for OK State

In what should add to the momentum of registering back-to-back wins, Oklahoma State is expected to get junior guard Isaac Likekele back in the lineup Monday. He missed the last two games with a foot injury.

Likekele leads the team with 7.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game and is second in scoring with a 10.2 average. He is one of six Oklahoma State players scoring at least 9.2 points a game.

Freshmen Cade Cunningham and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe combined for 40 points last Tuesday when Oklahoma State beat Iowa State 76-58 as an 11-point favorite.

Cunningham has 21 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as he continues to live up to his reputation as the top recruit in the nation in last year’s class. He is averaging 18.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

Cunningham is playing 75.1% of Oklahoma State’s minutes and shooting 44.6% from 3-point range. He has scored 20-plus points eight times and has hit double figures in 17 of 18 games this season.

Moncrieffe added 19 points along with 9 rebounds and 3 steals. He is scoring 9.4 points and pulling down 5.4 rebounds a game.

That was Moncrieffe’s second-highest scoring total of the season. The Canadian had totalled 6 points in the previous two games.

Sophomore forward Kalib Boone finished with 15 points and freshman guard Rondel Walker contributed 10 points and 4 steals.

Red Raiders Seek Revenge

Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 82-77 in overtime on Jan. 2 on the road as an 8.5-point underdog after blowing an 11-point lead in the second half.

Likekele led Oklahoma State with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists and Avery Anderson III also scored 17 points. Texas Tech got 21 points from McClung and 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists from Kyler Edwards.

It was the Cowboys’ second straight win over the Red Raiders.

With Likelele returning, Oklahoma State is in position to make it a season sweep against a Texas Tech program struggling to win close games.
