Check out deGrom’s movement in the National League Cy Young Award race. In early February, the New York Mets ace was listed at an average of +500 in the Cy Young odds. Today, his betting line has shortened to +388.
Meanwhile, Trevor Bauer of the Los Angeles Dodgers saw his average Cy Young odds length from +700 to +725 over the same time frame.
Bauer (2020) and deGrom (2018, 2019) have won the past three NL Cy Young Awards.

Jacob Climbs The Ladder
The sensational spring training being enjoyed by deGrom continued in his most recent outing on March 21st against the Washington Nationals. The right-hander threw 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just three hits, two walks, and striking out five.
His fastball was once again averaging as high as 99 to 100 mph. deGrom’s slider stopped the radar gun at 95 mph.

The Mets ace shows three wins for the spring. He’s fanned 21 through 13.2 innings pitched. deGrom also displays a 0.66 WHIP and an identical 0.66 ERA.
Instead of a second spring start against the Nats on Friday, the Mets opted to pitch deGrom in a simulated game. He’s slated to start opening day against Washington. Mets manager Luis Rojas didn’t want to give the Nationals another look at deGrom before that start.
Bauer’s Different Spin
A new MLB rule regarding foreign substances on pitches seems to be aimed directly at Bauer. On Wednesday, MLB revealed that it would be seeking to crack down on the use of foreign substances by pitchers.
Methods that will be deployed in order to decipher the cheaters will be via the analysis of a random sampling of baseballs, surprise inspections and spin-rate analysis. Last season, as he won the NL Cy Young with the Cincinnati Reds, Bauer slyly admitted that he’d discovered the secret of how the Houston Astros pitchers were able to increase their spin rate.

Bauer clearly put a target on his back by leaving the Reds to sign a three-year free-agent deal with the Dodgers. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner joining the reigning World Series champions. Can you say pressure under a massive spotlight?

It’s worth noting that Bauer’s outstanding 2020 campaign came during an unusual 60-game season. Would he have maintained that pace over 162 games?
On the other hand, deGrom has put together three brilliant seasons. He finished third in NL Cy Young balloting last year, just missed on joining Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson as the only pitchers in history to win three consecutive Cy Young Awards.
