World No. 1 Barty
Barty has now won 10 straight matches in Miami, dating all the way back to 2019, where she won the title. She is technically the defending champion here, as the Miami Open didn’t take place last year due to COVID-19.
With her quarterfinal win against Aryna Sabalenka, Barty is now 12-2 in 2021. She defeated the Belarusian tennis player in a 6-4, 7(7)-6(5)-6-3 win, where Sabalenka tested Barty from start to finish.
The defending champion failed to lose serve in the three set win. She recorded six aces, to her opponents 12, and managed a 73 win percentage on his first serve, while saving all seven of seven break points.
On paper she didn’t necessarily out play her opponent, it was a tough match from start to finish. But Barty was able to minimize her unforced errors, and capitalize on Sabalenka’s.
Three of Barty’s four matches at the Miami Open have gone three sets. She is the favorite heading into this match against Svitolina, but expect it to be another close one.
Svitolina’s Best Run
The World No. 5 checked one more accomplishment off in her career when she beat Anastasija Sevastova Tuesday night. She’s now officially had her best run at the Miami Open, reaching the semifinals for the first time in her career. Previously, her best run came in 2018 when she made it to the quarterfinals.
She defeated unseeded Sevastova 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday night in a pretty straightforward win, that lasted just over an hour.

Tied at 3-3 in the first set, Svitolina went off to win seven games in a row, saving two break points as well. The Ukrainian recorded 19 winners and converted six of seven break points in the match.
Svitolina will be looking to earn her spot in her first hard court final in 12 months as she takes on Barty.
This will be the seventh match between the two players. Svitolina won five matches in a row against Barty, before Barty was able to win one. That one win came in their last meeting back in 2019 at the WTA Finals.
These two also faced each other here in Miami back in 2018, where Svitolina won in straight sets.
Barty vs Svitolina Head-to-Head Stats
|9||WTA Singles Titles||15|
I do think this match is going to go three sets. Both players have been playing at a very similar level all week. Both actually came close to first-round exits. Svitolina lost her first set in the Round of 64 match, and had to piece together a comeback. Barty ended up dropping her second set against her opponent Kristina Kucova.
Barty does possess the better serve of the two, and she’s known for being able to generate her own power. Svitolina has a strong return, but as long as Barty gets behind the ball, she should be able to strike multiple winners throughout the match.
But again, Svitolina is playing strong tennis, and has shown that she can obviously defeat Barty. But Barty looks like she’s settling into her form that was present pre-COVID, and that’s definitely dangerous territory for her opponents.
Best Bet: Barty -225; 2-1 (+300)
