Dreams of European football next season have Everton primed for a big stretch run to its Premier League campaign. If the Toffees are going to achieve that goal, they’re going to have get back to their winning ways and do it fast.
Everton hopes to kick off the final part of its league schedule in style Monday when it hosts Crystal Palace in a crucial match at Goodison Park.
The Toffees, who sit in eighth place in England’s top flight, enter this contest having lost three consecutive games across all competitions prior to the international break. Everton is just three points behind fifth-place Liverpool, which cruised in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Arsenal.
On the other side, the Eagles enter this fixture in pretty solid form, having gone unbeaten in four of its last five games. Most recently, Crystal Palace chalked up a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti knows it’s now or never for his Toffees, who really needed that break after those three aforementioned defeats. They dropped league tilts against Chelsea (2-0) and Burnley (2-1) before getting bounced in the FA Cup quarterfinal round via 2-1 loss to Manchester City last time out.
Prior to that recent slump, Everton had come up roses during a run that saw it notch three shutout wins in a row. The highlight in that trio of wins came via the Toffees’ 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin continues to power the offense, bagging a team-high 14 goals so far this season. The Toffees’ talisman is in the thick of the league’s Golden Boot race, parked just four goals behind leader Mohamed Salah.
Statistically, Everton has been pretty mediocre when in comes to the advanced metrics. The Toffees sit on 33.5 expected goals and subpar 38.7 xGA, resulting in a disappointing -5.2 xGDiff and -0.19 xGDiff/90 minutes.
If you’re looking for a middle-of-the-road outfit, this is the club for you. The Eagles, who are in 12th place on 37 points, define mediocrity in England’s top flight. It always seems like this side is positioned somewhere between 11th and 15th place throughout the campaign.
With no danger of being relegated, it’s tough to figure out what Crystal Palace is playing for at this moment other than pride. The South London team did look good last time out, albeit against 19th-place West Brom in that win. It held a 1.3-0.8 xG advantage at game’s end, which is something it hopes to build on in this road showdown.
Wilfried Zaha, who has a team-best nine goals, and Christian Benteke (five goals) lead the Eagles’ offensive attack.
When comparing numbers with Everton, Crystal Palace drastically trails its opponent in all categories. The Eagles sit on 23.3 xG and an utterly ghastly 42.7 xGA, generating a dismal -19.4 xGDiff and -0.67 xGDiff/90 minutes.
Bottom line, Crystal Palace is lucky to be in its current position with those awful statistics. The Eagles’ figures are so poor they rank 18th overall in xGDiff and xGDiff/90 minutes, trailing only likely demoted sides West Brom and Sheffield United.
Betting Analysis & Picks
Everton might have been in a rut before the hiatus, but the one thing working for it in this spot is a fantastic run of results against Crystal Palace. The Toffees have owned the Eagles as of late, going unbeaten against them in an astonishing 12 consecutive matches across all competitions.
That said, I am backing Everton to get the job done at home as my top pick. The Toffees are simply better, plus I like the fair -129 odds we are getting at DraftKings via a moneyline wager.
I will also sprinkle a little on the total staying under the number as well. Expect a little rust from both clubs coming off the international break, which should lead to a low-scoring affair at Goodison Park.
Picks: Everton ML (-129); Total Under 2.5 Goals (-165)
