City on the Edge of Making History
City head into this game on the crest of a wave, with potentially a record-breaking run-in ahead of them. The Citizens remain on course for what would be an unprecedented four major trophies in one season, the biggest of which would of course be the Champions League. But they also have the Premier League title within their grasp, an upcoming FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United and a League (Carabao) Cup final against Tottenham. The Citizens are on the cusp of making history.
At the weekend, their comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester City left them just four wins away from claiming another English Premier League title and prepared them perfectly for this tie against BVB. Pep Guardiola even had the luxury of leaving out five of his big names, after the recent hectic round of internationals matches – namely John Stones, Raheem Sterling, İlkay Gündoğan, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden – and still see his team coast to victory.
Another great step towards glory!

While Leicester themselves are very much in the hunt for the Champions League places, they were made to look average as second-half goals from Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus gave Guardiola’s men a straightforward win.
Tough Times for BVB
For Borussia Dortmund, the season has been a difficult one and far removed from the usual two-way battle they have with Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title. Instead of challenging for top spot, they are currently struggling to claim a Champions League place for next season and currently sit fifth on 43 points, level on points with Bayer Leverkusen who are in sixth and just four points ahead of seventh-placed Borussia Monchengladbach.

So, as things stand, there is a chance BVB could miss out on European soccer altogether next season, and therefore an even greater incentive for them to not meekly succumb to, on paper, City’s greater quality. Their preparations have been less than ideal, however, and a 2-1 home defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend was not the way interim-manager Edin Terzic would have wanted his team to warm up for this massive game.

BVB the Winners in Previous Clash
The stats unsurprisingly lean in City’s favor but not as much as you might expect. BVB has only lost a single game in this season’s UCL and, along the way, have scored the same number of goals as City, while their respective number of goal attempts are also in the same ballpark. Where it differs is goals conceded: BVB has conceded just over one goal per game, while City has incredibly conceded just one goal.

The pair have faced each other just once before, also in the Champions League (in 2012), and it was the Germans who emerged victorious over two legs. A 1-1 draw at the Etihad was followed by a 1-0 in Dortmund, although it is worth noting that back then the full might of Sheikh Mansour’s fortune had yet to find its way into the City coffers. The Man City of 2021 is a very different beast.
In terms of team news, barring any late scares, Guardiola looks likely to have a fully-fit squad to pick from, while Terzic will be without the services of Marcel Schmelzer, Dan-Axel Zagadou, Axel Witsel, Youssoufa Moukoko and Jadon Sancho, He should though, crucially, have Erling Haaland leading his line, with the young Norwegian already being linked with a summer move to City.
15th successive away win… you're pretty good, guys! 😍

Man City vs Borussia Dortmund Best Bets
So, everything here points to a home win, especially with City’s defense being ultra-mean in this competition, but any team with Haaland in it has a chance and BVB’s domestic struggles may make them doubly determined to head back to the Westfalenstadion still in the tie. It is however hard to see past a City clean sheet and win but expect it to be a narrow one, perhaps by just a single goal.
Pick: Man City to win 1-0 (+750) / Both teams to score – No (+105)
