United in a Good Place

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team take a healthy 2-0 into the second-leg after a goal in each half in Spain, from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, gave them a comfortable victory. With the second leg on home territory, United’s position could hardly be stronger and they have bounced back strongly in this competition after the disappointment of being knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.

On the domestic front, things are also looking up for Solskjaer who, despite being under pressure for spells during the campaign, now looks almost certain to have delivered the club Champions League soccer next season. While Man City is out of sight at the top of the EPL, United in second are seven points clear of third-placed Leicester.

Revenge for United in North London

At the weekend, United avenged the 6-1 thrashing handed to them earlier in the season by Spurs at Old Trafford when they won 3-1 in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with goals from Fred, Edinson Cavani, and Mason Greenwood. It was the Red Devils’ third win on the spin but of even more concern to Granada should be the fact United are now unbeaten in eight games at Old Trafford.

The Spaniards will, however, cling to the fact that in the Europa League, most of United’s big wins have come away from home and in previous rounds, Real Sociedad and AC Milan have both earned draws in Manchester. However, the reality is that United has progressed on the 21 times they have taken a first-leg lead into the second leg of a European tie.

Granada Fading After Outstanding Season

Granada’s season has been outstanding both domestically and in Europe and even if they lose this tie it should still not diminish the amazing job Diego Martinez has done for the Spanish minnows. Disappointingly though the Nazaríes’ season has fallen away of late and their defeat by United was their fourth in a row in all competitions, but they did arrest their La Liga slump at the weekend with a fine 2-1 comeback win over lowly Real Valladolid – goals from Jorge Molina and Quini.

The win in Valladolid was timely as it not only boosted confidence ahead of the trip to Old Trafford but also ended a miserable run of five away games without a win. And so, while United away remains a daunting fixture for Granada, the win at the weekend at least sends them into the tie with a renewed spring in their step – one that had started to fade as their chances of securing European soccer for 2021-22 fizzled out.

What the Spaniards also have in their favor is an intriguing record of having scored at least once in each of their last 12 away games in all competitions; something they, of course, have to do at Old Trafford if they are to progress. If they can somehow grab an early lead, that could make for a very interesting evening

Manchester United vs Granada Best Bets

United are unsurprisingly odds-on for the home win and to be fair it is hard to make a case for a Granada comeback, albeit that early goal could make it a contest. But if Solskjaer’s men can stay solid early on, it could turn into a comfortable evening for them, and don’t rule out a repeat of the first-leg scoreline.

Pick: Man Utd to win 2-0 (+550)
