Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters Round of 16 Odds & Picks

  • The Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters begin Thursday, April 15th
  • Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are both heavy favorites to win their match
  • See below as we break down the odds and preview three of the upcoming matches

Aside from the two matches that include Djokovic and Nadal, most of the Round of 16 matchups have the opportunity to be close calls. There hasn’t been much upset in the earlier rounds, resulting in most of the top players still competing halfway through the week. But Daniil Medvedev, a top seed, has withdrawn from the tournament due to a positive COVID-19 test.

The quarterfinals are where things could get interesting, as top players will start to get tested as they start to see tougher, higher ranked opponents. But let’s take a look at the Round of 16, and see if there’s possible potential for any surprise quarterfinalists.

Odds as of April 14th

Andrey Rublev vs Roberto Bautista-Agut Prediction

Rublev had one of his best years in 2020, and has continued his high level of play this year. In 2021, he’s advanced to the quarterfinals or further in every tournament he’s played. This includes semifinal appearances in the past three tournaments he’s participated in.

Bautista-Agut has been pretty impressive as well. He is coming off a semifinal showing at the Miami Open, and has had two final appearances so far.

Neither player was really tested in their Round of 32 match. Rublev defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2, and Bautista-Agut beat Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-4.

These two players have seen each other quite a few times. This third round match will be their sixth meeting. Bautista-Agut currently leads their head-to-head 3-2. Their most recent match happened in Qatar earlier this year, where Rublev won the semifinal match in straight sets.

In 2020 Rublev showcased some impressive play on clay, including reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open. Neither player has a clay court tournament under their belt yet in 2021

Best Bet: Rublev (-220); 2-1 (+300)

Fabio Fognini vs Filip Krajinovic Prediction

15th seed Fognini is looking to defend his title here in at the Monte-Carlo Masters. The 33-year old is arguably not in the top form he was when he won in 2019, as he had ankle surgery last year.

Fognini is coming off two strong straight set wins as he enters his Round of 16 match. His opponent, Krajinovic has only played one full match this tournament, as his Round of 64 opponent retired from the match in the second set. But his most recent match against Juan Ignacio Londero was a very strong showing, as he won 6-0, 6-3.

Krajinovic currently leads their head-to-head record 2-0, with their most recent match taking place back in 2019. Their first match was played on clay, but was back in 2014.

Despite that head-to-head record, it’s a known fact how good of a player Fognini is on clay courts. But based on their head-to-head record, and the face that Fognini is still not playing at his best, I’m going to give the edge to Krajinovic.

Best Bet: Krajinovic (+110)

Casper Ruud vs Pablo Carreno Busta Prediction

This will be the third time these two players have seen each other, with their head-to-head record tied at one win each. Both of their previous matches have taken place on outdoor clay courts.

Both Ruud and Carreno Busta have had strong showing at the tournament so far. The 22-year old Norwegian is coming off a strong win as he sent home seventh seed Diego Schwartzman, and the Spaniard is coming off a 6-2, 6-3 straightforward win against Karen Khachanov.

Carreno Busta is currently on a six-game winning streak over the past week and a half, and he’s coming off a title win at the Andalucia Open. In 2021 he has yet to lose on clay.

Ruud has been playing well in 2021, and coming off a couple of quarterfinal showings himself, but Carreno Busta is clearly on a hot streak right now, and should be able to earn his spot in another final eight.

Best Bet: Carreno Busta (-118); 2-0 (+200)
