  • Tuesday May 25th is a big night of NBA Playoffs action with three games on the schedule
  • Boston and Brooklyn get the ball rolling before the Lakers and Clippers look to bounce back against the Suns, and Mavericks, respectively
  • Read below for the latest player props and picks

The Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets play Game 2 of their first round series on Tuesday May 25th. Boston was comfortably beaten in Game 1, and they face an uphill battle to keep this competitive. They are 9.5-point underdogs.

The rest of Tuesday’s schedule is more exciting. The reigning champion Lakers were outplayed by the Suns in Game 1. Panic will spread quickly if LeBron James and co fall 2-0 down, and the books can barely split the two teams.

Talking of postseason crises, the Clippers continued their bubble form in Game 1 against Dallas. Los Angeles is comfortably favored for Game 2 at Staples Center, but the pressure on them is enormous. Will they find an answer for Luka Doncic?

Odds as of May 25th

Nets Slow Tatum Down

Jayson Tatum went six-for-20 from the field in Game 1. The matchup with Kevin Durant proved problematic for the former third overall pick. Durant’s sheer size made it difficult for Tatum to get space, resulting in a third straight game shooting under 43% from the field. With a heavier offensive burden in Jaylen Brown’s absence, Tatum has the ball in his hands more than ever, and he’s facing the best defender on the Nets roster.

Tatum dished five assists in the Celtics’ Game 1 loss. That isn’t out of the ordinary for the former Duke forward. He has registered five or more assists 26 times this season, contributing to an average of 4.3. As much as Tatum has become an alpha, three-level scorer, he’s also much improved as a playmaker. Brad Stevens has run pick-and-roll with Tatum as the ball handler more each season.

The 30.5 total points line seems very high despite Tatum’s knack for scoring explosions. He’s only scored 31+ once in his last seven appearances. The assist line is much more reasonable, however, particularly with how Durant guarded him. Tatum isn’t going to be able to get the looks he wants, and he will be forced to operate as a playmaker as much as a scorer.

The Nets are still suffering defensive lapses off-ball. Tatum has the vision and passing ability to take advantage of those errors, which should help him hit this over easily.

  • Pick: Jayson Tatum over 3.5 assists (-144)

Ayton Repeats

Deandre Ayton’s playoff debut was spectacular. Posting a near-perfect 10-for-11 from the field and grabbing 16 boards, Ayton was a rock at both ends. He kept Anthony Davis quiet, and against a huge Lakers team, he was a rebounding menace on the offensive glass, plucking eight offensive rebounds.

As the Suns’ only rim protector, it was important to stay out of foul trouble. He did just that. It was an all-round brilliant outing from Ayton, and it was exactly what the Suns needed not only to keep Davis quiet, but to earn a handful of extra possessions with Chris Paul struggling.

The effort on the glass isn’t a surprise. Ayton was sixth in offensive rebounds per game in the regular season, and only 10 players averaged more boards per game. The scoring, however, is perhaps an outlier. Ayton was at 14.4 points per game in the regular season, with only three players who averaged 10 or more rebounds averaging fewer points per game.

Part of this uptick in offense is from more shots, some of which were earned by his own rebounding. The Lakers doubling Devin Booker helped, too. Ayton got up 11 shot attempts in Game 1, which is only the third time he’s reached double figures in that category in his last 11 games.

With Paul unlikely to be his usual self, Ayton is set for an important role on offense. Taking down eight offensive boards again is unlikely, but with a season average of 3.3, he should get a few. Having put up 37 points and rebounds in Game 1, the over looks good at 25.5 in Game 2.

  • Pick: Deandre Ayton over 25.5 points and rebounds (-113)
