Goal-Filled Start for West Brom

West Brom’s stay in the Premier League may have been short, but they’re off to a respectable start in the Championship. Their opening match was a 2-2 draw with a quality Bournemouth side, then Valerien Ismael’s men won a 3-2 thriller against Luton Town on Saturday.

The Baggies took a controlling 3-0 lead midway into the second half, but they took their foot off the gas pedal, allowing Luton to score twice in the last 20 minutes. Nevertheless, goals have been absolutely no problem for West Brom thus far, with Callum Robinson already netting in each of their first two games and tallying an assist. The Irishman scored just three times in the Premier League last term.

Robert Snodgrass, who joined the side in January on a permanent basis from West Ham, has been directly involved in four goals against Sheffield in seven fixtures. However, his status is up in the air for Wednesday as he continues to rehab from a back injury. But, he did bag a brace for their second team on Monday. If he could somehow feature, it would undoubtedly be a boost to the Baggies’ attack.

Defensively, West Brom will be looking to sharpen it up after conceding four times already. While Sheffield has struggled this season in the final third, they have the players who are capable of doing damage. With that being said, Ismael’s squad has to be stronger at the back on home soil.

Sheffield Struggling

The Blades were a massive disappointment last term in the top flight after such a promising campaign in 2019/20. Unfortunately, they’ve been on a similar path in the Championship. Sheffield has looked toothless in the final third, failing to score a goal thus far in two appearances.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham on Matchday 1, despite enjoying 76% of the possession. Maxime Colin’s winner in the 19th minute proved to be enough, with the likes of Rhian Brewster and David McGoldrick failing to score in front of their supporters at Bramall Lane.

Then on Saturday, the Blades played to a scoreless draw with Swansea City, who was on the verge of promotion last term after losing to Brentford in the Championship Playoff. Both sides had a combined three shots on target in a rather dull match that lacked any type of excitement.

On a more positive note though, Sheffield’s last meeting with Albion was a 2-1 victory in February, with Jayden Bogle and Billy Sharp finding the back of the net. If they can secure a victory on Wednesday at the Hawthorns, it would be just the second time ever the Blades win two straight against their rivals since December of 2000. The club also just strengthened their backline, signing defender Ben Davies on loan from Liverpool.

There have been chances for Sheffield United and you’d have to believe that Jokanovic’s men will finally break through and score some goals sooner rather than later. With West Brom showing vulnerability through the first two games, this will be a good opportunity for the visitors to find their identity on the attack.

West Brom vs Sheffield United Prediction

These two teams have been on opposite sides of the spectrum so far. Although West Brom has been the one scoring loads of goals, I think you’ll see Sheffield find their form in the final third on Wednesday as well. However, the hosts will come out victorious in a tightly contested affair at the Hawthorns.

Pick: West Brom (+110), Over 2.5 Goals (+115)
