Basilashvili’s First Masters 1000 Quarterfinal

29th seed Basilashvili went on to defeat Russian and 24th seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets on Wednesday, winning 6-4, 7-6(6). With this win, he booked himself a spot in his first career Masters 1000 quarterfinal.

Basilashvili has had an interesting year, as he’s been able to find success, securing two titles, but he’s been unable to perform on big stages against big opponents.

In his Round of 16 match, he managed to landed 58 percent of his first serve, converting 79 percent of them into points, and following it up with a 59 percent win percentage on his second serves.

The Heavy Favorite

Second seed Tsitsipas is the heavy favorite to move on here, but after a battle of a match, where he saw himself have to comeback after dropping the first set against Alex de Minaur, will the Greek superstar have enough left to continue to win? Tsitsipas took about three hours to beat de Minaur 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-2. With the win, he booked his spot in his first quarterfinal at Indian Wells.

When he lost the tiebreak in the first set, there were some doubts as to what would come of this match. But in another tiebreak, this time in the second set, Tsitsipas was the one to come out on top to force the decider.

Tsitsipas was definitely challenged in the match, and showed a bit of fatigue, as his previous match had gone the distance as well. But his serve was still a bit part of his game, as he put it on display with seven aces, to only one double fault. Whereas de Minaur only recorded one ace, with three double faults.

Basilashvili will be a tough opponent, but not one he doesn’t know, as he heads into the quarterfinals. But the Georgian tennis player has been playing near perfect this this week, and is bound to give Tsitipas some trouble.

Tsitsipas has won both meetings between these two, leading the head-to-head record 2-0. Both matches came back in 2019, and were played on hard courts. Despite Tsitsipas winning both, Basilashvili managed to steal a set both times.

Best Bet

The Greek is heading into this quarterfinal match after back-to-back exhausting matches, that saw him have to come back after losing the first set. Will fatigue play a part in this quarterfinal match?

Tsitsipas has been well tested this week, specifically over the past few days. But regardless of being tested, he ended up here, so he found a way to breakthrough. He’s playing similar tennis that we’re used to seeing from him, and there’s no reason that we shouldn’t continue to see it into the quarterfinals.

Basilashvili will look to take advantage of any sort of fatigue Tsitsipas does show. The 29-year old has been playing really well, and his serve has been working for him. To compliment his serving, he’s been able to follow up with strong forehands from the baseline, and will look to continue to use them.

As the overwhelming favorite, it’s hard to look past that. Look for Tsitsipas to move onto the semifinals, and for him to be able to do it in straight sets.

Best Bet: Tsitsipas 2-0 (-200)
