Fritz the Italian Conqueror

For the second straight match, American Fritz was able to overcome a world-class opponent who hails from Italy. He’d beaten 2021 Wimbledon finalist and #5 seed Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32.

Against #10 seed Sinner, the 31st-seeded Fritz recorded a 6-4, 6-3 verdict.

Surviving a pair of break points in the second set, Fritz served out to win the match. He punctuated the victory by hammering a backhand winner up the line for the final point.

Fritz hasn’t lost a set during the tournament. None of the six sets he’s played so far have gone deeper than 6-4. The 2019 Eastbourne title winner will be seeking to reach his fifth tour-level semifinal of the season.

Zverev On a Mission

Always considered someone with the talent to challenge to be the #1 player in the world, lately, world #4 Zverev is living up to that billing. He won the men’s singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Following up on that victory, he also took the title at Cincinnati.

Against Monfils, Zverev only dropped four games the entire match in winning 6-1, 6-3. The first set of the match lasted just 25 minutes. It took a little over an hour to complete the match.

Zverev won 76 of his first service points and 67% of the second service points. He won four of eight break points.

The German player dominated at the net, winning 19 of 25 points. Zverev hit 19 winners, compared to just 10 for Monfils. The French player committed 13 unforced errors. Zverev made only 11 such miscues.

In the round of 32, Zverev also beat Murray in straight sets. He won 6-4, 7-6(7-4).
